The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has accused the Nigeria Police Force of unlawful detention and human rights violations in the case of Inspector Adebisi Adenusi, a serving officer of the Ekiti State Police Command.
In an open letter dated September 10, 2025, RULAAC’s Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, said Adenusi has been held in solitary confinement at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, since June despite being dismissed from service on July 10. The group described the prolonged detention as “double punishment” and a violation of his constitutional rights.
According to RULAAC, the 48-year-old officer was arrested for posting a message in a private police WhatsApp group urging officers to consider strike action to demand better welfare. Although eight other officers arrested in connection with the post were released after orderly room trials, Adenusi remains in custody.
The organisation alleged that Adenusi has been denied access to his family, legal representation, and medical care. It added that he developed bronchitis while in detention and nearly died before receiving belated hospital treatment. His wife, Damilola, has reportedly raised alarm over the trauma and hardship facing the family since his arrest.
“This case is not just about one officer. It speaks directly to human rights, institutional integrity, and the morale crisis within the police,” RULAAC stated, accusing the Force of silencing welfare concerns through intimidation instead of constructive engagement.
The group urged the Inspector-General of Police to order Adenusi’s immediate release, punish those responsible for his treatment, and provide support to his family. It further called for reforms that would allow officers to air grievances without fear of persecution.
“The Nigeria Police cannot claim to defend the rights of citizens while trampling on those of its own officers,” the statement added.
