China welcomes two-week ceasefire between US and Iran

China has officially welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire in the Middle East, signaling a major de-escalation in global tensions. The Chinese government highlighted its diplomatic role in facilitating the deal between the United States and Iran to pause ongoing hostilities.
The agreement comes at a critical time for the global economy, as Tehran has agreed to temporarily reopen the Strait of Hormuz. This vital waterway serves as a primary transit point for much of the world’s oil, gas, and fertilizer supplies.
Beijing highlights diplomatic role in easing tensions
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning addressed the media during a regular news conference on Wednesday to discuss the breakthrough. She emphasized that China has consistently pushed for dialogue to prevent a total collapse of regional security.
While she did not directly address comments from President Donald Trump regarding China’s influence, she noted that Beijing’s efforts have been extensive. Foreign Minister Wang Yi reportedly held 26 high-level calls with various counterparts to secure this temporary truce.
Shuttling diplomacy and the path to peace
Mao Ning revealed that China’s Middle East envoy has been “shuttling across” the war-torn region for weeks to mediate between conflicting parties. These efforts aimed to bring both Washington and Tehran to a point of mutual, albeit temporary, agreement.
Beijing maintains that it will continue to work toward a complete and permanent end to the war. The Chinese government views this two-week window as a necessary first step toward restoring maritime stability and regional peace.
Terms of the ceasefire and the Hormuz reopening
Under the terms of the agreement, the United States will suspend all planned attacks on Iranian territory for the next fourteen days. In exchange, Iran has committed to allowing safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz for international shipping.
The announcement came just moments before a deadline set by US President Donald Trump, who had previously threatened severe military action. The reopening of the strait is expected to immediately ease the pressure on battered global energy markets.
Regional concerns and the ten point peace plan
While the United States and Iran have agreed to the pause, Israel has expressed a more cautious stance regarding the scope of the truce. Israeli officials stated they support the decision to suspend the bombing of Iran but clarified that the ceasefire does not extend to operations in Lebanon.
Meanwhile, a 10-point peace plan proposed by Iran has gained some traction in Washington. President Trump described the proposal as a “workable” basis for further negotiations, raising hopes for a long-term resolution beyond the two-week window.
