Burna Boy kicks couple out of concert for sleeping during his performance

Singer halts show midway to confront dozing fans
Afro-fusion superstar Burna Boy stirred reactions online after he abruptly halted his performance to eject a couple he spotted sleeping during his concert. The incident reportedly occurred during one of his recent shows on the African leg of his “I Told Them” world tour.
In a viral video circulating on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Burna Boy was seen pausing his live performance midway to call out the audience members who appeared uninterested in the show.
The visibly amused but irritated Grammy-winning artist pointed toward the couple and asked security to escort them out, saying, “If you want to sleep, go home. This is not the place for that.”
Mixed reactions trail Burna Boy’s outburst
The video, which has since gone viral, sparked a wave of mixed reactions from fans and music lovers alike. While some defended Burna Boy’s reaction, arguing that it was disrespectful for anyone to sleep during a live performance, others criticised the singer for being “too harsh” on paying fans.
One user wrote, “Burna Boy is right! His concerts are energetic — how can anyone sleep there?”
Another commented, “He didn’t have to embarrass them. They probably paid for those tickets.”
The debate soon trended under the hashtag #BurnaBoyConcert, with thousands weighing in on whether the self-styled “African Giant” had gone too far.
Burna Boy’s stage presence known for intensity
Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, is known for his high-energy performances and strong connection with his audience. His concerts are famous for electrifying live instrumentals, vibrant lighting, and crowd engagement that often lasts for hours.
The singer has repeatedly emphasised that his shows are for “real fans who connect with the music.” During a past performance in New York, he told fans that attending his concert should feel like being “part of a global movement, not just a music show.”
“When I’m on stage, I give my all. I expect my fans to do the same — bring their energy, their spirit, and their love,” Burna Boy once said during an interview with Apple Music.
Fans recall similar incidents
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Burna Boy has called out members of the audience for not meeting his expectations. In 2022, during a show in Lagos, he publicly rebuked fans who arrived late and accused him of arrogance, saying he would only perform for those who “deserved his art.”
Earlier this year, he also paused a performance in Paris to address a group of fans he claimed were recording him without enjoying the moment.
The latest episode appears to reinforce his reputation as an artist who demands full engagement from his audience.
Celebrity reactions and social media buzz
Several Nigerian entertainers have also weighed in on the viral video. Comedian Lasisi Elenu humorously remarked, “Sleeping at a Burna Boy concert? You must be fighting demons stronger than caffeine.”
Others, however, urged Burna Boy to exercise more patience, noting that exhaustion, jet lag, or even medical conditions could have caused the couple to doze off.
Cultural critic Uche Maduagwu tweeted, “Being a fan doesn’t mean you have to dance all night. Respect is mutual — artistes should also respect their audience.”
Despite the controversy, Burna Boy’s tour continues to sell out venues across Africa, Europe, and North America. His Lagos concert later this year is expected to draw one of the largest crowds in the city’s entertainment calendar.
Burna Boy’s dominance in global music
Since winning a Grammy Award in 2021 for Twice As Tall, Burna Boy has solidified his place as one of Africa’s biggest musical exports. His latest album, I Told Them, debuted to global acclaim and topped several international charts.
With hits like City Boys, Last Last, and On the Low, Burna Boy continues to attract millions of fans worldwide and redefine Afrobeat’s global image.
While the viral incident has sparked a flurry of online debate, one thing remains clear — Burna Boy’s concerts are never dull. Whether you’re dancing or dozing, the “African Giant” will make sure you’re noticed.
