Bright Chimezie reacts to Davido and Omah Lay’s hit ‘with you’ sampling his classic

Veteran Nigerian musician Bright Chimezie has reacted warmly to Davido’s trending single ‘With You’ featuring Omah Lay, which samples his 1980s classic ‘Because of English’.
In a video posted on his Instagram page, Chimezie was seen dancing to the track before publicly thanking Davido and Omah Lay for honouring his legacy through the nostalgic sample. The track, produced by hitmaker Tempoe, blends Highlife and Funk genres Chimezie helped popularize with modern Afrobeats stylings, making it a fan favourite.
‘With You’ is featured on Davido’s recently released fifth studio album ‘5ive’, which has further cemented his status as a consistent hitmaker. With its release, Davido became the first Nigerian artist to notch at least one number-one song every year from 2020 to 2025 — a record highlighted by TurnTable Charts.
The song also follows a broader trend in Afrobeats where contemporary stars are increasingly sampling classic Nigerian hits. In 2024, Tems sampled Seyi Sodimu’s ‘Love Me Jeje’ for her Grammy-winning song, while Asake borrowed from Jazzman Olofin and Adewale Ayuba’s ‘Raise The Roof’ in his ‘Active’ single featuring Travis Scott.
Following the album’s success, the five-time Grammy nominee is set to headline the ‘5 Alive’ tour, which includes 13 dates across major cities. A highlight will be his performance at the 60,000-capacity Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the UK, where he’ll share the stage with 50 Cent and Mary J. Blige. The tour will also make stops in Canada, including shows at the Scotiabank Arena and Place Bell.
