BREAKING: Jose Peseiro leaves Super Eagles

Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro has left his role after his contract expired with The Nigerian Football Federation yesterday February 29th.

The Portuguese revealed this in a post on his X account today, thanking the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and Nigerians for their support toward him. The 63-year-old coach led Nigeria’s senior team to second place in the recently concluded 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), losing 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast in the final in regulation time.

Some fans had called for his sack in the hours and some days after the final, upset with how he set the team up in what many thought was a winnable game in the circumstances.

Recall that the NFF, led by Ibrahim Gusau, had contemplated an discussed a contract renewal, though the offer was the €50,000 he was on before his contract expired.

Peseiro has been manager of the Super Eagles since 2022, after an initial attempt at securing the services of the seasoned manager had fallen through in December 2021.

He started his tenure as Super Eagles manager in rocky fashion, but he leaves having managed 22 games, winning 10, drawing five and losing seven games.
