Barau declares 100% loyalty to Tinubu amid 2027 running mate speculations

Amid rising speculation over who may emerge as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the 2027 presidential election, Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, has pledged full loyalty to the President, stating he is willing to do “whatever he asks” of him.

Barau made this declaration during a media briefing on Thursday in Abuja, while addressing questions on whether he would consider becoming Tinubu’s running mate. He affirmed that his commitment to the President is unwavering.

“Mr. President is my political father. You’ll be surprised if I start telling you what he has done for me and my people. So, whenever he asks me to do something when the time comes, I’ll do it. I’m very loyal to him — 100 per cent,” Barau said.

The Deputy Senate President also provided updates on the activities of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, which he chairs. He disclosed that the committee is reviewing 59 bills and 31 proposals, with further input expected from the public through memoranda.

According to him, zonal public hearings will be held across the six geopolitical zones as part of the review process. These will be chaired by senior members of the Senate as follows:

  • South-South: Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State – chaired by Senate President Godswill Akpabio or his representative.
  • North-West: Kano – chaired by Senator Barau Jibrin.
  • South-West: Lagos – chaired by Senate Leader, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele.
  • North-Central: Jos – chaired by Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Lola Ashiru.
  • North-East: Maiduguri – chaired by Chief Whip, Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno.
  • South-East: Enugu – chaired by Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Peter Nwebonyi.

The constitutional review process, Barau noted, is part of the National Assembly’s commitment to ensuring inclusive governance and aligning Nigeria’s legal framework with current realities.
