Ayodele Fayose says he fought battles throughout his tenure as Ekiti governor

Former governor praises Biodun Oyebanji’s peaceful leadership and development strides
Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has reflected on his turbulent years in office, saying he fought political battles “in the morning, afternoon, and night” throughout his tenure as governor.
Fayose made the remark on Monday during the commissioning of the Igbara-Odo–Ikogosi road project, one of the major infrastructural projects inaugurated to mark the third anniversary of Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration in Ekiti State.
Speaking at the event, the former governor commended Oyebanji for his developmental strides, his calm leadership style, and his ability to foster unity across political divides.
Fayose: “Oyebanji governs with comfort”
In his characteristic candor, Fayose said his own time in office was marked by constant political challenges, public criticism, and fierce opposition, contrasting that with what he described as the “peace and comfort” enjoyed by Governor Oyebanji.
“I am only here to celebrate Ekiti with you,” Fayose told the gathering. “You have raised the bar; you have put everybody together and turned this state into one of purpose and unity among all of us, irrespective of political party.”
The outspoken politician, who served as governor between 2003–2007 and again from 2014–2018, said despite belonging to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he could not help but acknowledge Oyebanji’s achievements under the All Progressives Congress (APC) government.
“I say to you always, I am not a member of your party, and I will never be. I am a member of the PDP,” he added. “But I celebrate a governor that has shown capacity to turn things around.”
“Morning, afternoon, and night were battles”
Fayose, known for his fiery political style, reflected on the turbulence that characterized his administration, hinting at constant political rivalries and controversies.
“I used my tenure as governor to fight battles — morning it was battle, afternoon it was battle, and night it was battle,” he said, drawing laughter from the audience.
He went on to tell Oyebanji that he was fortunate to lead the state in a more peaceful atmosphere.
“You are riding and doing everything for Ekiti people in comfort. If there were no dogs barking during the primary election, you wouldn’t know the value of God,” he said.
In a veiled reference to online critics, Fayose described some of his past opponents as “dogs on the internet” who were not even from Ekiti State.
“Those dogs on the internet who are not from Ekiti would be barking. I have chosen not to mention their names because when you mention their names, you are giving them relevance,” he added.
Commending Oyebanji’s unity and inclusive governance
The former governor praised Oyebanji’s approach to leadership, noting that his inclusive style has united various political actors and citizens across party lines.
“The array of work that you have done speaks for itself,” Fayose said. “We are with him, and anybody not backing this governor will be out to shame.”
Political observers at the event said Fayose’s remarks reflected a rare moment of cross-party solidarity in a state often known for its intense political rivalries.
Governor Oyebanji, who has frequently called for unity among political stakeholders in Ekiti, smiled as Fayose spoke, later thanking the former governor for attending the ceremony and recognizing the need to build on the efforts of previous administrations.
Development projects and continuity in governance
Since assuming office in 2022, Governor Biodun Oyebanji has been praised for his focus on infrastructure, education, and social welfare, emphasizing continuity in governance rather than political partisanship.
The Igbara-Odo–Ikogosi road, which was commissioned during the event, connects key communities in Ekiti’s tourism corridor, including the world-famous Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort.
According to the state government, the road project will improve tourism, ease local transportation, and boost commerce in the region.
Oyebanji has also prioritized the completion of several projects initiated by previous administrations — including Fayose’s — which analysts say reflects a shift toward policy continuity rarely seen in Nigerian state politics.
Political reconciliation in Ekiti
Fayose’s attendance at the event, despite belonging to the opposition, was widely interpreted as a sign of improving political relations in Ekiti. The state, known for its vibrant political scene, has witnessed periods of sharp division among leaders in the past.
By commending Oyebanji publicly, Fayose appeared to signal support for a new era of collaboration in the interest of development.
Political analysts suggest that such bipartisan gestures could foster stability and attract more investment into the state.
“Ekiti needs unity more than ever,” said Dr. Sola Olaniyi, a political commentator based in Ado-Ekiti. “When past and present leaders find common ground, governance becomes more effective, and the people benefit.”
Fayose’s legacy and political relevance
Despite his controversial past, Fayose remains one of Ekiti’s most influential political figures. His ability to draw attention, mobilize support, and command loyalty among grassroots voters continues to shape the state’s political dynamics.
While reiterating his loyalty to the PDP, Fayose said he would continue to support any initiative that benefits Ekiti people, regardless of party affiliation.
“Politics aside, what matters most is Ekiti’s progress. When a leader performs well, we must acknowledge it,” he said.
As the event concluded, both leaders exchanged pleasantries — a symbolic moment that many in attendance described as a hopeful sign of unity and maturity in Ekiti politics.
