Atiku slams EFCC over detention of ex-lawmaker Kazaure

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the detention of former House of Representatives member, Hon. Muhammad Kazaure, describing it as a violation of due process and constitutional rights.

In a statement posted on his official X handle on Friday, Atiku accused the EFCC of “lawlessness” and operating with “brazen disregard for due process,” noting that Kazaure’s arrest was done without any formal charge or explanation to his family or legal team.

“Kazaure is presently being held incommunicado, with no formal charge or explanation offered,” Atiku stated. He further alleged that the former lawmaker’s detention is a direct consequence of his vocal criticism of the Tinubu-led administration, describing the move as an attempt to “harass and silence critics.”

Drawing parallels, Atiku referenced the recent detention of social media activist, Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, who was released only after public outcry. He insisted that while the EFCC has a duty to uphold the law, it must do so transparently and within the bounds of the constitution.

The PDP chieftain emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution mandates that detainees be promptly charged to court or released, accusing the anti-graft agency of “constitutional delinquency” for holding Kazaure without charge.

He concluded by warning that the current administration’s selective crackdown on critics, while shielding allies facing corruption allegations, reflects a dangerous descent into impunity.
