Army rescues kidnapped cleric in Enugu gun battle

Troops kill one gunman during rescue of Rev. Johnson Onugwu

Troops of the 82 Division Nigerian Army and the Joint Task Force (JTF) South East, under Operation UDO KA, have successfully rescued a Christian cleric, Reverend Johnson Anayo Onugwu, in Enugu State.

The daring operation, which took place on Friday, January 30, 2026, followed the abduction of the cleric from his residence in the Ezimo community of Udenu Local Government Area earlier that morning. In the heat of the ensuing gun battle, the military “neutralized” one of the kidnappers, while others fled into the surrounding forests with gunshot wounds.

A credible military source revealed that the rescue was the result of a “swift, intelligence-led operation” that tracked the criminals to their hideout in the Itabolo general area. The troops engaged the kidnapping gang at Okpakeke community, where a fierce firefight broke out. Reverend Onugwu was rescued unharmed and has since been reunited with his family, bringing a sense of “Renewed Hope” to the local community that has been terrorized by recent abductions.

Recovered items from the scene included one AK-47 rifle, two magazines, and several rounds of live ammunition. The Nigerian Army has reassured the public that there were no casualties on the side of the troops or the rescued victim. This successful mission is being hailed as a major victory for the “National” security architecture in the South-East, which has been battling a surge in criminal activities targeting religious leaders and prominent citizens.

Joint security forces intensify offensive in the South-East

The rescue of Reverend Onugwu is part of a broader, intensified offensive against criminal elements in the Enugu-Benue border axis. Simultaneously, reports have emerged of a separate encounter where troops and local vigilantes gunned down four “notorious kidnappers” around Orokam in Benue State. These criminals were reportedly part of a gang that had been terrorizing travelers on the Enugu-Otukpo road, a vital commercial artery for the region.

Residents of the Ogbadibo and Udenu communities took to the streets in “widespread jubilation” following the news of the successful operations. Many families in the area have lived in constant fear for years, with some choosing to relocate due to the “ritual of abductions” on their farms and highways. The military has vowed to maintain this “Renewed Hope” momentum, ensuring that the remnants of the kidnapping gangs are flushed out of their forest hideouts.

Restoration of peace to the Enugu-Otukpo corridor

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 82 Division has reiterated the army’s resolve to collaborate with sister security agencies, including the Police and DSS, to ensure the safety of lives and property. He noted that the “Sanctity” of the South-East can only be restored through a combination of community intelligence and decisive military action. The public is encouraged to continue providing “actionable information” to help security forces preempt criminal attacks.

As the month of January 2026 concludes, the success in Enugu and Benue serves as a powerful deterrent to criminal syndicates. The “National” resolve to end the scourge of kidnapping appears to be yielding tangible results on the ground. For Reverend Onugwu and his congregation, the presence of the Nigerian Army has turned a terrifying ordeal into a testimony of professional and effective “National” defense.
