Anambra government to establish electricity regulatory commission to drive economic growth

Dr. Law Mefor, Commissioner for Information in Anambra State, has announced that the state government has concluded plans to establish the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission to promote industrialisation and economic growth.

Mefor disclosed this on Tuesday in Awka while briefing journalists on the outcome of the 10th Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) meeting.

He affirmed the government’s commitment to swiftly implement the recently signed Anambra State Electricity Regulation Commission Act, saying no delay would stall its execution.

According to the commissioner, the government will soon begin recruiting subject-matter experts to staff the new electricity commission.

In another major decision, the council resolved to confiscate and seal any facility used as a “holding place for child beggars,” in accordance with the Anambra Homeland Security Law 2025.

Mefor also announced the approval of several developmental projects aimed at improving residents’ lives and boosting the state’s internally generated revenue.

One of the key contracts approved was the construction of a pharmaceutical-grade kaolin warehouse at the Anambra State Kaolin Plant in Ukpor. The contract was awarded to Strata Projects Ltd at a cost of ₦190,482,467.94, with an eight-week completion timeline.

Additionally, a 750 KVA transformer will be supplied and installed at the same kaolin plant. Zamlic Ventures Ltd was awarded the contract, valued at ₦110,114,510.60, also with an eight-week duration.

The government also approved the procurement and supply of official uniforms and operational gear for the Ocha Brigade. The contract was awarded to Analiro Enterprises Ltd for ₦155,653,550.00.

Mefor emphasized that these initiatives are part of the government’s broader plan to restore societal values, strengthen the state’s moral foundation, and establish lasting legacies for future generations.

The highlight of the meeting, according to him, was the approval of the transformation of the Anambra Government House Mini City into what will now be called “Light House Awka,” reflecting the state’s slogan: “Light of the Nation.”
