Amotekun dismisses six pregnant recruits in Ogun over health concerns

The Ogun State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun, has dismissed six female recruits from its training camp after routine tests revealed they were pregnant before joining the agency.

Speaking on the development following a pregnancy screening conducted on about 125 female recruits, the State Corps Commander, retired Brig. Gen. Alade Adedigba, emphasized that the decision reflects the agency’s commitment to safety, professionalism, and discipline.

Adedigba explained that the dismissal was a proactive step to avoid potential health risks or complications during the rigorous three-week training period. These could include threats of miscarriage or preventable deformities due to the physically demanding nature of the program.

“The training we provide here is intense, rigorous and demanding, and we are concerned that the physical demands may pose risks such as threatening the pregnancies or causing avoidable deformities,” he said. “The difficult but necessary decision is therefore taken in conformity with our usual practice of providing a safe and secure environment for our recruits, and this move aligns with our broader mission of public safety and health.”

While noting the recruits’ commendable determination to serve, Adedigba assured them that they would be welcomed back in future recruitment exercises after childbirth.

“We appreciate their willingness to step forward and join our ranks; however, we must also ensure their health and the health of their children are not compromised. So, as they prepare for their new journeys into motherhood, we assure them that their commitment to serve is commendable, and they will have the opportunity to fulfil their aspirations in our future recruitment process, when they return stronger after delivery,” he said.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all recruits undergo training in a safe and healthy environment.
