Amid tension in Kano, deposed Emir Bayero cancels planned Sallah durbar

The deposed emir of Kano Aminu Bayero has cancelled his plan to hold a parallel Sallah durbar procession in the ancient city.

There is tension in the state after the two warring contenders to the throne, Emirs Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Bayero, indicated their intention to hold parallel traditional Sallah durbar.

But in a broadcast on Wednesday night, Mr Bayero said he shelved the plan in order to avoid breakdown of law and order in the state.

“This decision follows advice by our respected religious leaders. We have special regards for them. This is in addition to calls by elders and the deliberations we made with our council members.

“We pray that this withdrawal will bring a lasting peace to our dear state.

“We are reiterating that Sallah durbar is not a do-or-die affair. And if it will cause mayhem and crisis, which will lead to loss of lives and property, it is necessary for us to forgo the plan.

“We call on the people to use the festive period for visitation to strengthen the bond of kinship,” he added.
