Alexander Isak joins Liverpool in record £125m move, says goodbye to Newcastle
Sweden striker completes dramatic deadline day switch
Alexander Isak is officially a Liverpool player after sealing a British-record £125 million ($167 million) move from Newcastle on transfer deadline day. The 25-year-old has signed a six-year deal with the Premier League champions under new boss Arne Slot.
From hero to outcast in final Newcastle days
Isak’s move ends a tense transfer saga that saw him sit out Newcastle’s entire pre-season and first three league games, essentially going on strike to push the transfer through. Newcastle fans didn’t hold back, chanting “We don’t care about Isak” during a recent match.
Despite the sour exit, Isak paid tribute to the club and supporters in a farewell message on Instagram:
“Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle.
Together, we’ve written history and brought the club to where it belongs.”
Isak scored 54 goals in 86 league appearances for the Magpies, including one in the League Cup final earlier this year — a win that ended the club’s 56-year trophy drought.
Newcastle responds and moves on
Newcastle confirmed Isak’s departure in a brief statement, highlighting his impact since arriving from Real Sociedad in 2022.
To fill the gap, they’ve brought in Germany’s Nick Woltemade and DR Congo international Yoane Wissa before the window closed.
