AFCON: MARMOUSH, MOHAMED LEAD EGYPT’S CHARGE AGAINST D.R CONGO

The Pharaohs are the most successful team in the tournament’s history and will seek a first win at this year’s tournament to advance into the quarterfinals. The round of 16 clash between Egypt and D.R Congo is an intriguing one considering both sides were the only teams to draw all three group stage matches en route the knockout stages. The Pharaohs have been more entertaining offensively, scoring six goals although conceding six as well to underscore their defensive frailties.

The loss of inspirational captain and forward, Mohammed Salah is a big blow for the record seven-time winners although Omar Marmoush and Mostafa Mohamed have stepped up in getting the goals for Egypt. Nantes striker, Mohamed has scored in each of Egypt’s match, getting three of the team’s six goals thus far. Of the teams still involved, the Pharaohs top the charts regarding sequences of more than 10 passes (40) which is a testament to the sleek and rhythmic exchange of passes especially upfront. For their offensive arsenals, the team’s defensive frailties makes them vulnerable for a shock loss. During the group stages, the Egyptians were quite vulnerable against the likes of Mozambique, Ghana and Cape Verde, conceding two goals apiece from all three.

Egypt are going into the tie without their number one goalkeeper, Mohamed el Shenawy, who has been ruled out of the tournament after dislocating his shoulder. The loss of the Al Ahly goalkeeper should not be felt considering he will be replaced by National Bank’s Mohamed Abou-Gabal. The latter impressed at the last Africa Cup of Nations by leading Egypt to the final with several world class saves. Another huge loss for the Egyptians is that of influential midfielder, Emam Ashour to concussion; the Al Ahly midfielder has impressed thus far in the tourney with his measured and composed displays. If the Egyptians are to scale this hurdle, Coach Rui Vitoria will have to address the defensive lapses of the team as they press on for the elusive number 8.
