ADC, allies reject Electoral Act 2026, warn of democratic crisis

Nigeria’s leading opposition figures on Tuesday launched a coordinated political offensive against President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress-led government, rejecting the newly amended Electoral Act 2026 and warning that it could trigger a democratic crisis ahead of the 2027 general election.

The coalition described the controversy surrounding the amended law as a critical test of Nigeria’s electoral credibility, calling for urgent revisions to its provisions. It also urged citizens, civil society organisations and the international community to closely monitor what it termed a growing threat to democratic rule.

The position was contained in a statement read by Ajuji Ahmed, National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, at a world press conference. The statement was endorsed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Senator David Mark; the party’s National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola; former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi; former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi; former Cross River State Governor Senator Liyel Imoke; Senator Ireti Kingibe; Senator Dino Melaye; and Secretary of the NNPP Board of Trustees, Buba Galadima, among other opposition figures present.

The coalition maintained that unless the concerns raised over the amended electoral law are addressed promptly, public confidence in the electoral process could be eroded ahead of the 2027 polls.
