Floods disrupt schools in Bayelsa, government extends resumption
The Bayelsa State Government has announced a one-week extension for schools to resume after the 2024 flood break. This delay is to give floodwaters, which have overwhelmed many schools in the state, time to subside.
Originally set for Monday, November 18, 2024, the resumption date has now been moved to Monday, November 25, 2024, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Education.
In a circular issued on Friday, November 15, 2024, Simon-Peter Okene, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, explained that the extension was necessary due to the ongoing flood situation that has affected numerous school premises across Bayelsa.
“The extension is a result of the current flood situation observed in a reasonable number of school premises across the state,” Okene said. He also emphasized the importance of private schools complying with the state’s official school calendar.
The statement urged all school operators to ensure that safety measures, such as cutting grass and fumigating school buildings, are carried out before students return.
The government also expressed empathy for all Bayelsans affected by the floods, offering support during this challenging time.
