On Monday, March 10, President Bola Tinubu announced that the Federal University of Education in Kano will now be called the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education.
Yusuf Maitama Sule, who lived from 1929 to 2017, made huge contributions to Nigeria’s development, especially in politics and diplomacy. He served as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, where he was the Chairman of the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid. He also held important roles as the Chief Whip of the Federal House of Representatives (1954–1959), Leader of Nigeria’s Delegation to the Conference of Independent States in 1960, and Minister of Mines and Power, among others.
President Tinubu believes renaming the university after Sule will keep his legacy alive and serve as an inspiration for younger generations to embrace values like integrity, patriotism, and strong national character.
The Federal University of Education, Kano, is one of seven specialized universities of education in Nigeria, and as a federal institution, it will continue to be crucial in training future educators and improving the country’s education system.
