50% telecom tariff hike: POS operators may raise charges – AMMBAN

The Association of Mobile Money & Bank Agents in Nigeria (AMMBAN) has warned that its members may have no choice but to increase service charges due to the recent 50% hike in telecommunications tariffs approved by the Federal Government.

Ogungbayi Ganiyu, the National Public Relations Officer for AMMBAN, shared this concern in an interview with DAILY POST on Monday, January 21, 2025. He explained that the tariff increase would heavily impact businesses that rely on telecom services, especially data, which are central to their operations.

“We have not sat down and looked at the latest tariff hike yet,” Ganiyu said. “But the telecom tariff hike will impact the operations of our members. I am afraid this may also have a multiplier effect on service charges.”

Although Ganiyu acknowledged that POS operators might try to absorb the extra costs, he stressed that the overall effects of the tariff increase would likely be felt across the sector.

In related news, the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers has vowed to take the Federal Government to court over the 50% telecom tariff hike.

For context, the last time telecom tariffs were raised was in 2013.
