25 countries pause package deliveries to the US over new tariffs
Shipping shake-up triggered by US policy change
The United Nations’ postal agency confirmed on Tuesday that 25 countries have halted package deliveries to the United States. The move comes in response to an upcoming policy change by the Trump administration that removes a key tax exemption on small international packages.
New rules kick in August 29
Starting August 29, the US will scrap a tax exemption that previously allowed small packages to enter the country without added import duties. The change has already prompted postal services in France, Germany, India, Australia, and others to stop accepting packages bound for the US.
Global carriers waiting for clarity
According to the UN’s Universal Postal Union (UPU), postal operators from 25 member nations said they’ve suspended outbound services to the US due to “uncertainties specifically related to transit services.”
“These suspensions will remain in place pending further information on how US authorities will operationalize their announced measures,” the UPU said.
What this means for senders and businesses
Until the US clarifies how the new tariffs will be implemented, international senders—especially small businesses—are in limbo. The disruptions could impact e-commerce, gift sending, and international trade for everyday users.
