Zidane says anyone who doubts Messi as the greatest does not belong in football

France head coach Zinedine Zidane has named former Argentina captain Lionel Messi as the greatest player in the history of football.

Asked about the greatest-of-all-time debate, the Real Madrid legend told Marca: “If anyone still has doubts about the GOAT debate, honestly, that person does not belong in football society.” Messi, 39, is the most decorated footballer in the game.

The Inter Miami forward has won every major club and international honour, including the FIFA World Cup and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League. He recently retired from Argentina after leading the side to second place at the World Cup, following defeat to Spain in the final.

Zidane’s line is not a statistical footnote. It is a closed verdict from a player who won the same Champions League as a midfielder and later as a coach, and who now picks national teams. By saying doubters “do not belong in football society,” he treats the argument as settled cultural knowledge rather than a live comparison with Cristiano Ronaldo or earlier eras.

Messi’s case rests on volume of honours plus a World Cup that arrived late in his career. Critics of the GOAT framing still point to different positions, different teammates and different generations.

Zidane is not interested in that caveat. For a French coach who played against and alongside the modern greats, the debate is over. The rest of football can keep counting trophies. He has already named the man at the top of the list.
