Yusuf sets up 36-member committee to boost voter registration in Kano

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has inaugurated a 36-member committee on Voter Registration and Civic Awareness with a directive to double the number of registered voters in the state to 10 million.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Friday, Yusuf, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Faruk Umar, charged the committee to mobilize citizens across all polling units to participate in the exercise.

He stressed that voter registration was now “a compulsory responsibility” that would empower Kano residents to elect leaders with integrity and passion for development. “Your duties are to ensure that Kano registers an additional five million voters by the end of the voters’ card revalidation,” the governor said.

According to him, Kano remains the most populous state in Nigeria, yet many citizens remain disenfranchised due to lack of voter cards. He urged the committee to carry out door-to-door awareness campaigns to ensure mass participation.

The committee, chaired by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, was tasked with enlightening citizens about the importance of voter registration and ensuring compulsory compliance.

In his response, Waiya described the assignment as a call to service, pledging that the committee would not disappoint the governor in achieving its mandate.
