We've recorded 564 recoveries from 636 meningitis cases - Yobe

Haruna Umar, the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer of the Primary Healthcare Management Board, has revealed that Yobe has recorded at least 564 recoveries out of the 636 recorded cases of meningitis in the state, Premium Times reports.

Umar disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Damaturu, on Monday, March 11.

Umar further reported that 22 deaths have unfortunately been recorded, while 50 others were being closely monitored in the state’s isolation centers. According to him, the first case the state recorded was reported on December 24, 2023, but wasn’t confirmed until January 26, 2024.

He explained that the 636 total cases were spread across six local governments including Machina, Nagere, Fune, Potiskum, Gujiba, and Fika.

The health official reassured the public that the state was working tirelessly to curtail the spread of the disease.

“The government has established treatment centers in the affected LGAs, including temporary isolation camps in some secondary schools.

“The government has also engaged 18 ad hoc staff, including two medical doctors at the isolation centers, among other measures,” Umar added.
