We will try again for Michael Edwards' return - FSG
Liverpool owner, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has expressed a desire to bring back former Sporting Director, Michael Edwards to the club, Fabrizio Romano reports.
He said this in a post on X on February 28.
Edwards was appointed by Liverpool to the Sporting Director role in 2016. He held the position until 2022.
Liverpool has not found it easy without him, as he was responsible for the club’s transfer business during his time in charge. A time that saw the club secure the signature of several top players, some of whom are still key figures at the club. Some of those infamous signings are forward Mohamed Salah, forward Sadio Mane, left back Andrew Robertson, centerback Virgil van Dijk, and goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Mane left for Bayern Munich in 2022.
Since the departure of Edwards, Liverpool has already made two appointments to that role. FSG appointed Julian Ward to replace Edwards, then Jorg Schmadtke after him, at the beginning of this season. Transfers have not been as clean-cut and impactful since Edwards left.
On January 26, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp announced that he would be leaving the club at the end of the current season. The current season ends in June. This news accelerated Liverpool’s plan for a rebuild, and the perfect man for that rebuild is Edwards.
Liverpool has approached Edwards before, and he made it clear that he was not coming back. However, FSG has decided to reach out to him again and try one more time to lure him back to the club.
Life without Klopp will be difficult enough, FSG would like to know that the football operations are in expert hands when Klopp is gone.
