Wali says Peter Obi is the only opposition bank

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aminu Wali, has declared that Peter Obi is the only opposition figure with a solid and reliable vote bank ahead of 2027. Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, Wali noted that the former Labour Party presidential candidate has maintained a unique connection with a specific segment of the electorate. He argued that while other opposition leaders are struggling to stay relevant, Obi’s base remains largely intact and motivated.

Wali believes that the “Obidient” movement has transitioned from a temporary social media phenomenon into a formidable political structure. He pointed out that Obi’s ability to mobilize young Nigerians and the professional class gives him a distinct advantage over more traditional politicians. According to the elder statesman, any serious attempt to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next election must take Obi’s influence into account.

The challenge of building a united opposition front

While acknowledging Peter Obi’s strength, Wali also highlighted the difficulties in uniting the fragmented opposition parties in Nigeria. He noted that personal ambitions and regional sentiments often prevent the major players from forming a truly cohesive coalition. Without a united front, he warns that the ruling APC will find it much easier to retain power in the 2027 general elections.

He urged the leadership of the PDP and other smaller parties to look beyond their differences and find a common ground with the Labour Party. Wali suggested that a “super-coalition” featuring Peter Obi as a key pillar is the only way to present a viable alternative to the current administration. For him, the focus should be on saving the nation’s democracy rather than individual political glory.

Assessing the performance of the current administration

Wali also took a swipe at the economic policies of the APC, stating that they have failed to bring the promised relief to the average Nigerian. He cited the rising cost of living and the devaluation of the naira as evidence of a “dysfunctional” economic strategy. He believes that the electorate is becoming increasingly frustrated and will be looking for a leader who offers a practical and transparent plan for recovery.

Peter Obi’s supporters often point to his track record of fiscal discipline as the primary reason why he remains popular despite his loss in 2023. Wali agrees that Obi’s message of “frugality in governance” resonates with many Nigerians who are tired of the extravagant lifestyle of the political class. This message, combined with his solid vote bank, makes him a constant threat to the status quo.

Future of the Labour Party and the 2027 race

As the political temperature in the country begins to rise, the role of Peter Obi in the 2027 race remains a topic of intense speculation. Some analysts believe he should return to the PDP, while others argue that the Labour Party provides a more “untainted” platform for his vision. Wali insists that regardless of the platform, Obi remains the “center of gravity” for the opposition.

The road to 2027 is still long, and many things can change, but the current assessment by a veteran like Aminu Wali cannot be ignored. The “Rice Man” of Nigerian politics has spoken, and his words will likely trigger more conversations about the future of the opposition. For Peter Obi, the task is to expand his vote bank beyond its current boundaries to achieve a national consensus.
