WAFCON 2024: Esther Okoronkwo warns South Africa ahead of semi-final clash

Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has issued a strong warning to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, declaring Nigeria’s unwavering determination to win the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Speaking ahead of their high-stakes semi-final clash on Tuesday evening, Okoronkwo expressed confidence in the Falcons’ preparation and mindset.

“The fact that we want to win the tournament is a great motivation to bring the trophy back to Nigeria,” she said during a pre-match interview.

“We go into every game with the same mentality to want to win, regardless of what is in front of us. We are prepared and ready to win tomorrow.

We’re not really looking at the other team’s stats; we just focus on us and what we’re going to do tomorrow.”

The match carries added significance as South Africa knocked Nigeria out of the 2022 edition via a penalty shoot-out. Both teams reached the semi-finals this year after hard-fought wins—Nigeria beat Senegal, while South Africa edged Zambia in the quarter-finals.

The much-anticipated encounter will take place at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, with both nations eyeing a spot in the final and a chance to lift the continent’s most coveted women’s football trophy.
