News of the legendary “Gwo gwo gwo ngwo” crooner’s death emerged on Friday evening, sending shockwaves through the Nigerian music community and beyond. His passing was confirmed on Saturday by the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, via his official X handle.

Governor Mbah mourned Ejeagha’s death, describing it as “a void too difficult to fill.” He praised the late folklorist for his calm demeanor and cultural impact, noting that his influence extended across international boundaries.

In honour of the departed icon, Governor Mbah reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to immortalising Ejeagha. During Ejeagha’s lifetime, the state government reconstructed Obinagu Road and renamed it Chief Mike Ejeagha Road. The road, which leads directly to Ejeagha’s residence in Abakpa Nike, Enugu, had long been a personal wish of the late legend one left unfulfilled by previous administrations.

Ejeagha, widely regarded as a custodian of Igbo oral tradition, used his music to preserve proverbs, morals, and history, earning him a lasting place in the hearts of generations of listeners.

Further tributes are expected from the national government and the wider cultural community.
