NNPP rejects Apapa convention, calls it an attempt to undermine the party

On Friday, February 7, 2025, the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) strongly disowned the recent convention held in Apapa, Lagos, by individuals claiming to be members and leaders of the party.
The NNPP described their actions as an “open assault on the integrity of the party” and emphasized that these individuals were not members of the party but were “sponsored elements.”
At a press conference, Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, the National Chairman of NNPP, clarified that the party, under his leadership and recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), had not held any National Convention recently, nor had it inaugurated a new National Working Committee (NWC).
“Let me make it clear, there is only one NNPP, and it is under my leadership,” Ahmed said. “These people who held a so-called convention have no connection to the NNPP.”
He explained that the current NWC was formed in 2022, in line with the Electoral Act, and has been properly recognized by INEC. The chairman criticized the individuals behind the Apapa event, calling them former party members who had engaged in anti-party activities, leading to their expulsion and subsequent sanctions. Instead of resolving their issues through internal party mechanisms, these members sought to distract the party, Ahmed said.
“These individuals have lost multiple court cases across the country,” he continued. “In April 2024, a Federal High Court ruled that they were expelled from the party and had no right to represent or act in the name of NNPP.”
Ahmed also addressed their recent defiance of a court ruling, stating that despite a clear injunction from a Federal High Court in Abuja, these individuals went ahead with the meeting in Lagos, which he described as a “ludicrous charade” held in a hotel lobby, not a National Convention.
“We want to make it clear to the world that NNPP does not operate from Apapa, and we did not hold any convention this year in any hotel lobby in Lagos,” he concluded.
