UK sets new savings requirement for foreign students applying for visas
On Friday, September 13, the UK government announced new financial requirements for international students who plan to study in London for nine months or more.
Starting January 2, 2025, foreign students must show proof of at least £13,348 in savings when applying for a visa. The new rules require students studying in London to demonstrate that they have £1,483 per month to cover living costs. For those studying outside London, the monthly requirement is £1,136.
This update marks an increase from the previous requirements of £1,334 per month for London and £1,023 for other cities in the UK.
The Home Office explained that these changes are designed to match the updated maintenance loans available for domestic students, ensuring that both international and domestic students have sufficient funds to cover their living expenses. The adjustments reflect the rising cost of living in the UK.
The new financial requirements will be in effect for all students arriving in the UK from January 2, 2025.
