Toyin Abraham says her film ‘Iyalode’ heals, declares herself a prophet

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham has described herself as a “prophet” whose movies offer healing and inspiration to audiences, citing her latest project Iyalode as proof.

In an Instagram post, Abraham shared a message from a therapist who revealed that she had used Iyalode during a session with an elderly client. According to the therapist, watching the film together helped the client feel emotionally uplifted and relieved.

Reacting to the message, Abraham declared, “I just don’t shoot movies, I’m a Prophet and I speak and heal people through my Movies. IYALODE is still showing in cinemas in Nigeria, please find time to watch and be blessed.”

The film, which premiered in cinemas on June 6, has already proven to be a commercial hit, grossing over ₦100 million in its first four days. Directed by Adebayo Tijani and co-produced by Abraham and her husband Kolawole Ajeyemi, Iyalode features a stellar cast including Muyiwa Ademola, Gabriel Afolayan, Ibrahim Chatta, Bukky Wright, and Kehinde Bankole.

Set in the fictional village of Kulende, the historical drama follows the journey of Asabi Adikaka, a female warrior who confronts betrayal, power struggles, and societal expectations in her quest for justice and redemption. The film explores themes of legacy, resistance, and the complexities of female leadership.

Iyalode adds to the growing trend of Nigerian films that centre on strong, complex female characters in historical and political settings  a movement that continues to shape the narrative landscape of Nollywood.
