Tinubu’s Abia visit postponed to June, Remi Tinubu to launch humanitarian project May 23

President Bola Tinubu’s scheduled visit to Abia State on Thursday, May 23 for the commissioning of the Port Harcourt Road in Aba and the flag-off of the Abia Medical City has been postponed to early June, according to the state government.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, May 20 by Abia State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, during a press briefing on the outcome of the week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu attributed the postponement to President Tinubu’s tight official schedule, assuring that a new date will be communicated shortly.

Remi Tinubu to proceed with Abia visit

While the President’s visit has been rescheduled, First Lady Remi Tinubu is still expected in Abia on May 23 to launch a humanitarian initiative under her Renewed Hope programme.

Other key announcements from the ExCo meeting:

  • Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic (formerly Abia State Polytechnic), Aba:
    All staff whose promotions were withheld since 2008 have now been promoted, and the payment of their outstanding salaries has begun.

  • Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu:
    The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted full accreditation to the following programmes:

    • Law

    • Agriculture

    • Mass Communication

    • Educational Management and Planning

    In addition, the State Government and the ABSU Governing Council have approved the recruitment of additional lecturers to fill existing vacancies.

  • Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu:
    Following the suspension of the former Rector, Prof. Vincent Onwe, the government has established a panel of inquiry to investigate his tenure and activities.

Commissioner Kanu emphasized the state’s commitment to education reform, staff welfare, and delivering on key infrastructure promises, even as it anticipates the President’s rescheduled visit in June.
