Tinubu calls for global teamwork to achieve sustainable development at Abu Dhabi summit
On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, President Bola Tinubu addressed world leaders in Abu Dhabi, emphasizing the importance of global cooperation to achieve sustainable development. He highlighted that Nigeria is open to working with other countries to create a resilient and fair world for everyone.
His remarks were made on the second day of the 2025 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, with the theme: “From Climate Imperatives into Economic Prosperity: Bridging Africa with the Global Energy Future.”
Speaking to a global audience, President Tinubu stressed that no country can tackle sustainability on its own. He noted that the interconnected world we live in requires countries to share knowledge, collaborate, and support one another.
“The fight against climate change is not just an environmental issue but a chance to reshape the future of our continent and the global energy landscape,” said Tinubu. “As leaders, stakeholders, and citizens of this planet, we stand at a crucial moment in history. To succeed, we must innovate, work together, and act as one global community.”
The Nigerian leader also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions. He mentioned that Nigeria is adopting sustainable development programs that align with global goals while also considering the country’s economic needs.
“Our energy transition plans, like many nations, focus on diversifying our energy sources and moving away from fossil fuels. This shift to cleaner energy is key to our national development,” said Tinubu. “We are working towards creating infrastructure for electric vehicles and expanding the use of Compressed Natural Gas to support our green energy goals.”
Additionally, Tinubu highlighted that Nigeria is implementing climate-smart agricultural practices to improve food security while reducing environmental damage. He pointed to the National Clean Cooking Policy, which aims to promote clean energy and offer health and environmental benefits, especially for communities in Africa.
The President discussed the environmental challenges Nigeria faces, such as deforestation, desertification, and flooding, which are affecting millions of people. He called on other countries to work together and use innovation and technology to solve these pressing issues.
“We need international support to build a Green Economy in Africa,” he said. “These investments are expensive and require the help of partner countries, international organizations, and individuals who share our vision of a sustainable and prosperous future.”
In addition, Tinubu shared that Nigeria became the first African nation to fund green projects through Sovereign Green Bond proceeds, with the third round of funding currently in progress. He invited investors to partner with Nigeria in this area and emphasized his government’s commitment to creating an environment where businesses can thrive.
He also praised the President of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, for organizing the summit and for his vision in bringing global leaders together to discuss solutions to the world’s most urgent challenges.
