Tinubu affirms support for traditional institutions, receives 46th Alaafin of Oyo

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the critical role of traditional institutions in Nigeria’s development, calling for their active involvement in implementing policies that impact citizens’ lives.
He made this known on Friday while receiving the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Abdulhakeem Owoade I, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The President, who hosted the monarch, his wife, and a delegation of traditional rulers from Oyo State, congratulated the newly crowned Alaafin, describing his ascension to the historic throne as divinely ordained and a reflection of the people’s will.
“Your ascendancy to the throne of your fathers is historic… like my becoming a president, it is the divine will of the Almighty God,” Tinubu said, praising the king’s humility, cultural loyalty, and vision for development—even while abroad.
President Tinubu also applauded the Oyo traditional council for the smooth transition following the death of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi in April 2022, and highlighted the contributions of sons of Oyo Kingdom in his administration, including Ambassador Victor Adeleke and Colonel Nurudeen Yusuf.
Stressing the importance of collaboration, the President noted that his administration would continue to prioritize education, healthcare, cultural values, and national unity through inclusive governance.
In his remarks, Alaafin Owoade expressed the traditional council’s full support for the President’s vision, stating that the audience granted to the delegation reflects Tinubu’s respect for Nigeria’s traditional heritage.
“Today, I speak not just as the custodian of culture and tradition but as a voice for my people,” the monarch said, urging for continued partnership between traditional institutions and modern governance.
He lauded Tinubu’s ongoing reforms in the economy, infrastructure, youth empowerment, and agriculture, describing them as bold steps toward national transformation.
