Trump and Putin begin crucial phone call to discuss peace deal for Russia-Ukraine war

On Tuesday, March 18, a highly anticipated phone call between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin officially began, according to the White House.

The call, which started at 10 a.m. ET, is expected to focus on negotiating a peace deal to end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. White House spokesman Dan Scavino reported that the call was “going well and still in progress” as of 10:54 a.m. ET.

This conversation follows Trump’s statement on the previous night, where he mentioned that “many elements of a final agreement have been agreed to, but much remains.” Trump also expressed his concerns about the loss of lives in the conflict, writing on his Truth Social account, “Thousands of young soldiers and others are being killed. Each week brings 2,500 soldier deaths from both sides, and it must end NOW. I look very much forward to the call with President Putin.”

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that while the leaders will discuss the war in Ukraine, the call will also address a “large number of questions” regarding the normalization of U.S.-Russia relations.
