Poland asks US to send nuclear weapons amid rising tensions with Russia

On Thursday, March 13, Poland made a bold request to the United States, asking for the deployment of nuclear weapons in their country as a way to protect against possible threats from Russia.

The request comes after growing concerns that Russia, led by President Vladimir Putin, might target NATO countries like Poland. NATO, which stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a group of countries that support each other, especially in times of conflict.

In an interview with The Financial Times on Thursday, Poland’s President, Andrzej Duda, reminded President Joe Biden that he had asked for nuclear weapons in Poland back in 2022. He argued that with NATO expanding eastward since 1999, it’s time for NATO’s military presence to also move further east.

“For me, this is obvious,” Duda said. “I think it’s not only that the time has come, but that it would be safer if those weapons were already here.”

Duda pointed out that when Russia decided to move some of its nuclear weapons into Belarus in 2023, they didn’t ask for permission from anyone. “They didn’t hesitate,” he said.

A few days ago, on March 10, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that Poland was in talks with French President Emmanuel Macron. The topic of discussion? Whether France’s nuclear weapons could help protect Europe from Russia’s growing threats.

As tensions between Russia and NATO continue to rise, Poland is taking steps to make sure it’s prepared for whatever might come next.
