NCAA warns airlines against deporting Nigerian passengers midway

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a stern warning to international airlines against deporting Nigerian passengers after transporting them partway to their destinations.

NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, Michael Achimugu, announced the directive in a statement on Thursday, condemning the practice as “unacceptable” and harmful to passengers and Nigeria’s aviation industry.

“These actions, which involve the refusal of boarding or denial of entry at intermediate or transit stops due to visa and travel restrictions, are completely unacceptable,” Achimugu said.

The NCAA emphasized that airlines are responsible for informing passengers of any visa or travel restrictions before their journey begins. The agency referenced the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Part 19.21.1.1), which mandates airlines to ensure passengers are aware of any potential entry issues before departure.

To curb the practice, the NCAA announced immediate enforcement measures, warning that any airline found violating the directive will face fines, suspension of flight operations, or other penalties.

“The NCAA expects the cooperation of all airlines in maintaining the integrity and professionalism of the aviation industry, as well as ensuring the wellbeing of Nigerian passengers,” Achimugu stated.
