Suspended Rivers Governor Sim Fubara breaks silence, vows loyalty to oath amid political storm

On Wednesday, May 29, suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara marked the second anniversary of his swearing-in with a message of resilience, reflection, and commitment to his mandate, despite being temporarily removed from office in a highly charged political crisis.

In a solemn statement commemorating his May 29, 2023 inauguration, Fubara reaffirmed his dedication to the oath of office and the people of Rivers State, pledging to continue placing the state’s interests above all else.

“Today marks exactly two years since I took the oath of office as your 7th democratically-elected Governor,” he said. “Despite the turbulence, I have remained steadfast and focused, guided by the oath I took and the solemn promise I made to always put Rivers State first.”

Fubara acknowledged the political turmoil that has roiled the state since his fallout with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing the journey as “challenging but progressive and impactful.”

His anniversary message comes amid continuing uncertainty following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu, who declared a six-month state of emergency in Rivers State to prevent a full-blown security breakdown. The unprecedented move saw Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) appointed as Sole Administrator of the state.

Fubara, whose rift with Wike destabilized the Rivers State House of Assembly and threatened the fragile political order, used the anniversary to reach out to the people with gratitude and assurance.

“For your sacrifices, contributions, and the roles you’ve played in your respective capacities, I say a heartfelt thank you,” he stated.

His remarks follow a recent reconciliation meeting with Wike, during which the FCT Minister signaled readiness for peace, even referring to Fubara as his “son.” Though the public optics suggest a truce, political analysts remain skeptical about whether it will lead to a full restoration of Fubara’s powers.

The statement notably avoids any direct reference to President Tinubu’s intervention or the legality of his suspension, but subtly signals Fubara’s intent to remain politically relevant—and potentially reclaim his seat.

With Rivers State now under temporary military-style administration, the political future of Fubara remains uncertain. However, his calm and composed anniversary message suggests he is preparing for a longer political game, one that may yet see him return to office or reassert influence in the volatile state landscape.
