Super Falcons arrive in Morocco ahead of 2025 WAFCON opener against Tunisia

Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, arrived in Casablanca, Morocco, on Wednesday night ahead of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which kicks off next month.
The delegation, made up of 22 players and team officials, flew in from Lisbon, Portugal, where they recently held the Portuguese women’s national team to a goalless draw in a friendly at the Estádio José Gomes on Monday. Notable performances in that match came from goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Shukurat Oladipo, and veteran forward Francisca Ordega.
China-based Folashade Ijamilusi and USA-based Asisat Oshoala were already in Morocco ahead of the team’s arrival.
The Super Falcons will begin their WAFCON campaign on Sunday, July 6, with a Group B fixture against Tunisia at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. They will later face Botswana and Algeria in their remaining group stage matches.
Nigeria, nine-time champions of the tournament, remain the most successful team in WAFCON history. They have never failed to reach the semi-final stage since the tournament’s inception as the African Women Championship in 1998. The Falcons claimed the title in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018, and reached the last four in 2008, 2012, and 2022.
The team is widely tipped as one of the title contenders for this year’s edition, as they seek to reclaim the trophy after missing out in 2022.
