Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle opens up on touchline clash with South Africa’s Broos

Tensions boiled over during World Cup qualifier

During Tuesday’s intense 2026 World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and South Africa at the Free State Stadium, a heated moment unfolded on the sidelines. Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle and South African coach Hugo Broos got into a verbal spat that caught the attention of fans and officials alike.

Match officials stepped in to cool things down

At one point, both coaching benches confronted each other, and the referees had to step in to calm the situation. Chelle and Broos exchanged words, showing just how much was at stake in this high-pressure match.

Chelle: “Sometimes you have to fight”

Speaking after the game, Chelle explained that the clash was just part of football’s intensity.

“There is tension. You can say something badly and sometimes you’ve to fight, not a real fight, but you need to manage it,” he told reporters.
“Sometimes it is difficult because of the pressure. This is normal when both benches want to win. You know every decision of the referee, one of the benches isn’t agreeing with it. This is football.”
