Stop the diversionary tactics DWI tells El-Rufai

Watchdog group demands accountability from ex-governor

The Dialogue for Western Initiative (DWI) has issued a strong warning to the former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, regarding his recent public statements.

The group accused the former governor of employing “diversionary tactics” to avoid the ongoing investigation into his administration’s finances. They urged him to face the probe squarely and provide clear answers to the allegations raised by the Kaduna State House of Assembly.

Nasir El-Rufai has recently made several high-profile claims linking his current ordeal to political rivalries and the 2027 elections. However, the DWI argues that these claims are a deliberate attempt to distract the public from the astronomical N432 billion fraud allegation. The group believes that accountability should not be treated as a political game but as a constitutional requirement.

Addressing the N432 billion corruption allegations

The crux of the matter lies in the report by the ad-hoc committee which scrutinized the loans and contracts awarded during El-Rufai’s eight-year tenure. The committee alleged that massive sums of money meant for infrastructure were diverted through “unapproachable” bureaucratic channels. The DWI insists that the former governor owes the people of Kaduna a detailed explanation of how these funds were utilized.

“Running to social media to cry wolf will not stop the wheels of justice from turning,” a spokesperson for the group stated. They noted that every public servant must be ready to give an account of their stewardship without resorting to name-calling. The group emphasized that the investigation is a test for Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies to prove their independence and effectiveness.

The role of the EFCC in the high-profile probe

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has already started questioning several key officials who served under the former governor. The DWI has called on the commission to remain professional and not be intimidated by the political stature of the individuals involved. They argued that the “Renewed Hope” agenda can only be credible if the fight against graft is total and unbiased.

Supporters of El-Rufai have described the investigation as a “witch-hunt,” but the watchdog group maintains that the evidence speaks for itself. They pointed out that the findings were made by a legislative body and not just a rival political faction. The group has promised to monitor the legal proceedings closely to ensure that the interest of the taxpayers is protected.

Demand for transparency in Kaduna State governance

The current administration in Kaduna State is reportedly struggling with the heavy debt profile left behind by the previous government. The DWI noted that this debt has significantly limited the state’s ability to provide essential services like healthcare and education. They argued that if the funds were indeed mismanaged, those responsible must be held accountable and the money recovered.

Nigeria’s political culture has often allowed leaders to walk away from office without proper scrutiny of their financial dealings. The DWI believes that the El-Rufai case could serve as a landmark precedent that changes this narrative for the better. “The era of acting like gods while in power and playing victims when asked questions must end,” the group concluded.
