A Civil Society Organization, Nigeria Integrity Watch, NIW, has warned the National President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajero, against dragging the labour movement into a political battle involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
In a statement signed by its national convener, Dr John Samuel Nangi, in Abuja on Friday, the group said the NLC’s meddling into the case undermines the labour Union’s credibility.
According to the group, the suspended senator was “unnecessarily stubborn, manipulating the media and misleading the nation”.
Reports that the warning followed the NLC’s blistering attack on the Senate over its refusal to allow Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan to return to the chamber after serving a six-month suspension.
Earlier this week, the NLC described the Senate’s stance as “a descent into legislative dictatorship and democratic anarchy,” insisting her suspension had expired and no longer held legal weight.
But the youth group said the labour union had crossed the line, meddling in the legislature’s internal affairs.
It further accused the senator of ignoring a Federal High Court ruling requiring her to issue a public apology and pay a ₦5 million fine.
The statement urged NLC executives to strip Ajero of his position, claiming he had “lowered the bar of leadership” and reduced the once formidable labour body into a “one-man organisation where statements are issued at will.”
