Speed Darlington faces legal battle as case moves to Abuja
Controversial Nigerian musician and content creator Speed Darlington, also known as AKPI, has been transferred from Owerri to Abuja following his latest arrest, human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju confirmed.
This marks the second arrest in two months for Speed Darlington, who was initially detained on October 4, 2024. His most recent arrest occurred during a show in Owerri, Imo State, on November 27, 2024.
The first arrest followed the release of a contentious video in which Speed Darlington allegedly mocked fellow artist Burna Boy, linking him to American rapper Diddy, who is embroiled in legal troubles involving the FBI. The video sparked outrage, and shortly after its circulation, Speed Darlington’s mother issued a public plea for his release.
In an emotional video shared on social media, his mother, who resides outside Nigeria, revealed she had been informed of his disappearance and begged Burna Boy to show mercy and facilitate her son’s release. She also called on Nigerians to intervene, stating she feared her son would “rot in detention.”
As the case unfolds, Deji Adeyanju has weighed in on the situation, emphasizing in a recent interview with media personality Daddy Freeze that defamation, at the center of the controversy, is a civil matter rather than a criminal one.
The case remains ongoing, with further developments anticipated in the coming weeks.
