Sowore under fire for calling Nigeria’s police chief ‘illegal IGP’

A civil society group, the Concerned Citizens for Justice and Rule of Law, has sharply criticized activist politician Omoyele Sowore for referring to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun as the “illegal IGP.” The group claims that Sowore’s remarks not only insult the IGP but also undermine the credibility of the Nigeria Police Force.

Sowore had made the controversial comment on his social media pages, prompting police to file cybercrime charges against him. On Monday, Sowore was invited to the Nigerian Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) office in Abuja for questioning regarding various offenses, including resisting public officers, obstructing lawful orders, cyberstalking, and other charges.

By Wednesday, Sowore was formally arraigned on charges of cybercrime for calling IGP Egbetokun “illegal” on social media. He pleaded not guilty to the accusations.

In response to the incident, the Concerned Citizens for Justice and Rule of Law condemned Sowore’s actions, accusing him of attempting to destabilize the country and undermine national security. The group, led by spokesman Comrade Kabir Matazu, described Sowore’s rhetoric as part of a “distraction campaign” aimed at diverting attention from the progress made in strengthening national security.

“We condemn in its entirety the baseless and malicious attacks being launched against the IGP by Omoyele Sowore,” the statement read. “His unwarranted attacks on the IGP are part of a well-orchestrated effort to weaken Nigeria’s institutions and make it easier for foreign interests to control the national narrative.”

The group also defended IGP Egbetokun’s leadership, praising his efforts in reducing violent crime. According to the CSO, under Egbetokun’s leadership, there has been a noticeable decline in crimes such as kidnappings, armed robbery, and terrorism-related incidents. Additionally, the IGP’s community policing initiatives were credited with strengthening the relationship between the police and citizens, enhancing cooperation in intelligence gathering.

“The IGP has quietly and effectively implemented strategic reforms that have significantly curbed crime,” the statement added. “Despite these achievements, he has remained modest and focused on his duty rather than seeking personal glory.”

The group urged Nigerians to disregard Sowore’s antics and called on the judiciary to ensure that justice is served, emphasizing that no one, regardless of status, is above the law. It also urged IGP Egbetokun to stay focused and not be distracted by the criticisms.
