South Korea’s Acting President Han Duck-soo expected to resign ahead of Presidential bid

South Korea’s acting leader, Han Duck-soo, is expected to step down on Thursday to formally launch his campaign for the country’s upcoming presidential election, according to Yonhap News Agency.
Citing unnamed government and former ruling party sources, Yonhap reported that Han will address the nation upon his resignation Thursday afternoon, with an official announcement of his candidacy expected on Friday. The election is scheduled for June 3.
Han, 75, rose to prominence after assuming leadership following the removal of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was ousted over a controversial and short-lived declaration of martial law. Since then, Han has gained public visibility, and recent opinion polls have shown growing support for the veteran technocrat.
In accordance with South Korean law, Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok is expected to assume the role of acting president once Han steps down.
Han’s potential candidacy has been the subject of speculation for weeks, fuelled by his increased national profile and a perception of steady leadership during a period of political uncertainty. His resignation would pave the way for a formal bid, marking a significant shift in South Korea’s political landscape ahead of the June vote.
The Prime Minister’s office has not yet responded to requests for comment.
