South African coach denies turning down Super Eagles head coach role
South African coach Pitso Mosimane has responded to rumors suggesting he declined the opportunity to coach Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
Mosimane, who previously led the South African national team, Bafana Bafana, was considered a top candidate for the position after Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro’s contract expired in February.
Reports had circulated that Mosimane rejected an approach from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), but he clarified that he was never contacted.
“I have to be honest, I never said no to the Super Eagles, and nobody can easily say no to the Super Eagles. That situation was not there,” Mosimane stated, as quoted by iol. “It has to be on the table; sometimes when it’s not on the table, you need not get excited and get the proper contact right, and everything must be done right.”
He added, “But who would turn down the chance to coach the Super Eagles? It would have been a good one for me to be honest because I really wanted to do national team.”
Currently, former international Augustine Eguavoen is at the helm of the Super Eagles.
