Shots fired at Donald Trump at rally, one killed
Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump survived what could only be an assassination attempt on Saturday, July 13, as a gunman fired shots at him while he was giving a speech at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania.
The male gunmen was later shot dead by the Secret Service, officials said.
Trump was rushed offstage and swamped by Secret Service agents, but by the time the secret service stepped, two shots had already been fired and a bullet had pierced the “upper part” of his right ear.
He was later taken for treatment and has now been discharged.
Unfortunately, while Trump himself survived the incident, one spectator was shot dead, and two others were critically injured.
The shooting has been condemned by Trump’s main opponent in the presidential election, President Joe Biden, as well as Biden’s predecessor, Barack Obama.
Trump later took to his Truth Social network to express how he felt during the shooting. He said a bullet pierced the “upper part” of his right ear.
“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin,” Trump wrote. “Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening.”
Although the attacker has been killed, his identity and motive have yet to be disclosed as of the time of this report.
In his reaction to the shooting, President Biden said, “There’s no place in America for this kind of violence. Everybody must condemn it.”
Biden later spoke to Trump, the White House said.
In his reaction, former President Obama wrote on X that there “is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy.” He said he was “relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt.”
It is unclear how the shooting will impact the November US presidential election that sees Trump locked in a close race with Biden of the Democratic Party.
