Shock, sorrow as car ploughs into crowd at Liverpool’s historic title parade

The football community came together in grief and solidarity on Tuesday, May 27, following a tragic incident in Liverpool the previous day.
On Monday, May 26, as thousands gathered despite torrential rain to celebrate Liverpool’s Premier League title victory, a car suddenly swerved into the crowd, injuring 27 people and sending them to hospital.
Police confirmed that terrorism was ruled out as a motive. The incident occurred just minutes after the players’ open-top bus passed by, shattering what had been a joyous occasion. Among those injured were four children, with one child reported to be in serious condition.
Authorities arrested a 53-year-old white British man in connection with the event.

Liverpool’s former captain Steven Gerrard shared a poignant image on Instagram featuring the city skyline with a red heart, while ex-defender Jamie Carragher wrote on X, “Devastating end to the day… just pray everyone is ok.”
FIFA President Gianni Infantino offered his condolences: “Football stands together with Liverpool FC and all fans of the club following the horrific incident that has taken place during the trophy parade in the city,” he said in an official statement.
Video and photos circulating on social media showed the vehicle being stopped and surrounded by angry fans who smashed the back windows as police worked to control the situation. Disturbingly, four people, including a child, were reported trapped under the car at one point.
The Premier League also expressed its deep concern on X: “We are shocked by the appalling events. Our heartfelt thoughts go out to all those injured and affected. We have been in contact with Liverpool FC and have offered our full support following this serious incident.”
