Shehu Sani accuses El-Rufai of jailing critics, releases names

Former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has accused ex-Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, of jailing four individuals for criticising his administration while he was in office.

Sani made the allegation in a post on X on Friday, following El-Rufai’s recent remark describing President Bola Tinubu as a tyrant over an alleged attempt to arrest him at the Abuja airport upon his return from Egypt.

Officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) were reported to have attempted to arrest the former governor, a development that sparked political reactions.

Reacting, Sani said that between 2015 and 2023, several individuals were arrested and imprisoned for criticising the Kaduna State Government on social media during El-Rufai’s tenure.

He identified the alleged victims as Dr. John Danfulani, Mal Nasiru Jagaba, Steven Kefas and Segun Onibiyo, claiming they served months in Kaduna Prison.

“These are some of those arrested and sent to jail for criticizing the Governor of Kaduna State and Kaduna State Government on their social media handles from 2015-2023,” Sani wrote. “Their names are Dr John Danfulani, Mal Nasiru Jagaba, Steven Kefas and Segun Onibiyo who served for months in Kaduna Prison. Tell me the meaning of a tyrant. I will post more.”

El-Rufai, who spoke on the airport incident during an interview on Friday, accused the current administration of persecuting opposition figures.
