Imo Police and security forces step up efforts to combat crime

On Monday, March 10, the Imo State Police Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, local vigilantes, and forest guards, launched a major operation targeting suspected kidnappers and other criminals hiding in forests within Avu, Irete, Ihiagwa, and Obinze, all in Owerri West LGA.

According to DSP Henry Okoye, the police spokesperson, the operation was necessary due to an increase in criminal activities in these areas, including kidnappings and armed robberies.

The operation has also expanded to Ngor-Okpala LGA, where there are reports of suspected kidnappers taking over the region.

Some villagers, who wished to remain anonymous, told our correspondent that criminals have been attacking travelers along the busy Aba-Owerri Expressway, shooting and killing passengers. A bus driver who was attacked revealed that he was forced to stop by masked men carrying guns and speaking with foreign accents.

The most affected area, the villagers noted, is a remote spot between Ihitte Ngor and Umuechem Umuhu, just after the Navy checkpoint at the Airport Road Junction.

DSP Okoye called on the public to assist security agencies by reporting any criminal activities in their areas. He emphasized that the ongoing operation is aimed at flushing out criminal groups that are threatening the safety and peace of the state.
