Senator Kawu Sumaila condemns killing of 16 hunters in Edo

A senator representing Kano South, Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, has condemned the killing of 16 hunters by member of vigilante group in Edo State.
In a statement he issued on Saturday, Mr Sumaila said no society that upholds justice and the rule of law can allow such heinous crimes to go unpunished.
He promised to raise the issue at the senate, and would not relent until justice is served.
“I am deeply shocked and outraged by the brutal and senseless killing of innocent people in Benin City, Edo State, by individuals who have taken the law into their own hands. This barbaric and uncivilized act is a clear violation of the fundamental right to life and must be condemned in the strongest terms.
“No society that upholds justice and the rule of law can allow such heinous crimes to go unpunished. The dangers of mob actions and jungle justice can not be overstated, as they undermine the very fabric of law and order. No individual or group has the right to act as judge, jury, and executioner.
“I call on the government and security agencies to spare no effort in ensuring that the perpetrators of this gruesome act are identified, arrested, and brought to justice. The rule of law must prevail, and justice must be served to send a strong message that lawlessness has no place in our society.
“My heart goes out to the families of the victims in this difficult time. I share in your pain and grief, and I offer my deepest condolences. May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their loved ones find the strength to bear this tragic loss.
“As the senator representing this constituency, I will ensure that this matter is raised for a full-scale investigation and appropriate legislative action as soon as the National Assembly resumes from recess. We must take decisive steps to prevent a recurrence and restore public confidence in our justice system.
“Justice must be served, and I will not relent until those responsible are held accountable,” the senator added.
