Senate affirms commitment to tax reform bills, rejects suspension claims
The Nigerian Senate has dismissed claims of suspending or withdrawing deliberations on the Tax Reform Bills, reaffirming its commitment to advancing the reforms in the public interest. Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the statement during Thursday’s plenary, assuring that the legislative process remains on track despite mounting external pressures.
Addressing rumors in the media, Akpabio declared, “The Senate cannot be bullied. Any reform that serves the interest of Nigerians will move forward. These bills contain provisions that are in the best interest of the public.”
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele echoed these sentiments, cautioning against misinformation from social media. “We have not suspended or withdrawn deliberations on these bills. They are executive communications, and only the executive can withdraw them. Any attempt to intimidate the Senate is undemocratic,” Bamidele said. He also underscored the Senate’s independence, adding, “We don’t take orders from any office, no matter how highly placed.”
To address contentious issues in the Tax Reform Bills, the Senate has formed a special committee representing Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The committee, led by Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro, has been tasked with engaging Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Lateef Fagbemi. They are expected to resolve disagreements and report back before public hearings are conducted.
Public hearings and consultations with key stakeholders, including governors, religious leaders, and business leaders, will also be part of the process. “If six weeks are insufficient, we will extend the time. We are committed to transparency and addressing all concerns,” Akpabio assured.
The Tax Reform Bills, submitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in October, have faced significant opposition, particularly in Northern Nigeria. Despite the resistance, both the executive and the Senate agree on the need to resolve contentious issues and move the reforms forward.
